BrightRoll+Wibbitz Series: The Top 6 Programmatic Video Questions From Publishers

Posted by Hilary Kay on Jun 15, 2015 11:00:00 AM

This blog series was created in collaboration with BrightRoll, the leading platform in programmatic video advertising. Learn more about their solutions for publishers.

The first part of this series covered the basics of programmatic video to establish a strong foundation for publishers. Now that we've laid out what programmatic's all about, we're going to dive into the 6 key questions that have held many publishers back from getting started with selling programmatically. Understanding the 'who', 'what', and 'why' of programmatic still leaves many publishers with questions regarding how this new system will benefit them, if there are risks involved, and how it will work into their current workflow. It’s the lack of answers to these questions that has inhibited many publishers from reaping the benefits of programmatic advertising. As misconceptions are put to rest and clarity surrounding programmatic is achieved, more and more publishers will release their inventory into the programmatic market. Doing so will not only stimulate the growth of digital video, it will support publishers to more efficiently and effectively monetize their content.

Posted by Hilary Kay on May 7, 2015 10:26:00 AM

The Apple Watch has spurred an enormous amount of press coverage with a wide range of sentiments surrounding what could be deemed the first ‘consumer wearable’. But how does the average consumer really feel about Apple Watch? As an average consumer myself, I wanted to investigate how the Apple Watch might enhance my day-to-day life. I’m already quite fond of my iPhone, so I knew the Watch would need some serious selling points to win me over. When thinking about why I love my iPhone too so much, I identified its three main functions: Communication (email, text messages, calls), Tools (alarm clock, calendar, banking), and Content (social media, web browsing, news).

BrightRoll + Wibbitz: Programmatic Video for Publishers

Posted by Hilary Kay on May 4, 2015 9:30:00 AM

This blog series was created in collaboration with BrightRoll, the leading platform in programmatic video advertising. Learn more about their solutions for publishers.

2015 has been deemed the “Year of Video”, largely supported by the explosive growth in digital video advertising. As the media, brands, and publishers discuss digital video ad trends, programmatic is at the forefront of this conversation. While programmatic video may be a familiar term, many are still not entirely confident about what it is or how it applies to them. For publishers thinking about joining the programmatic market, it’s important to understand what programmatic is, who are the key players, and why it’s the most effective method to monetize video content. Understanding these factors will build confidence in publishers to better optimize their ad inventory through programmatic methods, and subsequently increase revenue. That’s a tough deal to turn down, so let’s jump into it.

This Is How Text-to-Video Technology Works

Posted by Hilary Kay on Mar 19, 2015 12:47:00 PM

We may throw around the term “text-to-video” a little too casually here at Wibbitz. In all honesty most of us hadn’t even heard of the technology prior to joining the team. The concept of text-to-video is probably foreign to you for a good reason, it’s foreign to just about everyone. Text-to-video technology is new to both the tech and publishing worlds, and Wibbitz’s version is distinctly unique.

Autoplay video has become an expected guest at almost all social media parties. Scrolling through our feeds, we’re accustomed to seeing a glimpse of the TransAsia Taiwan plane crash next to video snippets of a friend’s birthday shenanigans. Although first met with some pushback from consumers, it appears most have accepted that the autoplay feature is here for the long haul. And besides, who needs the extra effort of clicking “play” anyway?

Video Ads' Not-So-Simple Law of Supply And Demand

Posted by Hilary Kay on Feb 26, 2015 12:00:00 PM

With the media industry's current obsession with digital video ads, there seems to be something missing in the conversation: the videos. Article after article discusses the massive growth, spend, and performance of video ads; and there have been numerous hefty transactions within the space including Yahoo’s acquisition of BrightRoll, Aol’s acquisition of adapt.tv, and Facebook’s acquisition of LiveRail. But amongst all of the buzz and excitement, very little attention has been paid to the key ingredient in making it work, video inventory. In this balancing act, media publishers are responsible for the supply [video inventory], while brands & advertisers represent the demand [video ads]. At this point, the demand side of the scale is weighing heavier. Sure we have video superstars like BBC, Vice, and CNN, but the majority of mid-level and even major publications lack the quantity of video content needed to support the fast growing video ad industry.

What was born as a social network for Harvard students has grown into a multi-use site with 1.39 billion monthly users. From the introduction of Timeline, to majorly improving the Newsfeed, Facebook has undergone many changes and added new features over the years. But the most recent changes on the site are here to stay, and have lead to the noticeable uptick in videos. Consumer uploaded videos, video ads, brand and media videos all flood our newsfeeds. If Zuckerberg is right (which he usually is when it comes to Facebook), then this is just the beginning of the site’s boom in video.

Google Now Delivers You Twitter Tweets With New Integration

Posted by Hilary Kay on Feb 17, 2015 11:30:00 AM

A budding relationship between Google & Twitter has been confirmed in recent weeks, and much ambiguity still exists surrounding how things will pan out. The partnership will integrate real-time Twitter tweets into Google search results beginning in the early part of this year. Twitter will gain a significant increase in exposure, reaching an even larger audience than top competitor Facebook, in order to stimulate the company’s slump in user acquisition. Google will benefit from real-time news, snippets of consumer thoughts, and zeitgeist conversations, which most likely will be used to “monetize AdWord inventory against real-time cultural or consumer needs.” This relationship is undoubtedly a good play for the two tech giants, but how will it affect publishers?

Love stories and letters were once satisfactory forms to share our undying love, but we now crave an even more engaging way of reliving those special moments. Videos are preferred, and sometimes even expected, to document our most meaningful memories.

When Snapchat, the ephemeral photo & video sharing mobile app, launched its new Discover feature earlier this year, it was met with mixed reviews from both its audience and publishing professionals. For most of its millennial users, Snapchat has been a way to share moments and stories with friends. Snapchat is social media. Discover is different.
